Our go-to guide to Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment 2024

It’s that time again – the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP) is beginning, and it’s your chance to change up some things you may not like about your chosen Medicare coverage. Healthcare decisions can be tricky, but understanding the details and timing of the enrollment period can help you make more informed decisions.

We hope this roadmap will answer your questions about Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment without getting you bogged down in hard-to-understand medical jargon. Let’s begin!

Is Medicare Advantage the same as Medicare Part C?

Yes! Simply put, “Medicare Advantage” and “Medicare Part C” are two names for the same coverage. Whether it’s a Medicare Advantage or a Medicare Part C plan, they both mean an alternative to Original Medicare — although they are required to match the coverage level of Original Medicare.

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies collaborating with Medicare, bundling coverage for hospital stays, doctor visits, and sometimes extra benefits like vision, dental, and more prescription coverage. However, remember that these plans come with a provider network — so stick to it to avoid extra charges for out-of-network care.

What is Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment?

MA OEP is an annually occurring event that gives people with Medicare Advantage plans the chance to switch things up. Whether you want to switch to a new Medicare Advantage plan, make the leap from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan, or head back to Original Medicare from a Medicare Advantage plan, this enrollment period is your ticket to making those changes.

When is Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment?

Knowing the open enrollment dates is key. You have a three-month window to take a close look at your Medicare Advantage coverage and make tweaks that suit your healthcare needs better. MA OEP officially starts on January 1, 2024, and ends on March 31, 2024.

What you should know: If you decide to switch, your new plan kicks in on the 1st of the month after you apply.

4 Steps to Mastering Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment

As you get ready for MA OEP, make sure to factor in these considerations:

Step 1 – Consider Your Health Requirements:

Were there any shifts in your health status, or do you expect some different healthcare needs this year? Take into account factors like medications, consultations with specialists, and any services you might need to budget for dental, vision, or hearing.

Step 2 – Evaluate Your Existing Coverage:

Take a close look at your current Medicare Advantage plan, examining its benefits, costs, provider network, and prescription drug coverage. Think about whether the plan still aligns with your healthcare requirements or if anything needs to be adjusted. This is especially important if you’ve recently made a switch during the 2023 Medicare Open Enrollment period last autumn and are new to the plan.

Step 3 – Investigate Medicare Advantage Plan Options:

Invest some time researching the various Medicare Advantage plans available in your community. Look at the coverage and benefits they offer and figure out the costs, including premiums, deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. Pay close attention to their provider networks — are your preferred doctors and specialists available? If there are plans that better match your particular healthcare needs and align with your preferences, mark them down so you can compare options.

Step 4 – Give Some Thought to Your Medication Coverage Needs:

For those needing prescription drug coverage, examine each plan’s lists of covered medications — also called “formularies.” Confirm that the plan you’ve chosen (and the ones you’re considering switching to) effectively covers the medicines you rely on. Also, watch for any changes to the plan’s formularies noted for the rest of the year.

What Changes Can I Make During MA OEP?

In the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment period, you’ve got two options to tweak your coverage:

1 – Switch Between Medicare Advantage Plans: If you’re already in a specific Medicare Advantage plan, feel free to hop over to another one that fits your needs better. Check out the plans in your area and choose one that matches what you’re looking for in terms of coverage, benefits, and costs.

2 – Leave Medicare Advantage and Return to Original Medicare: If you’re in one Medicare Advantage plan but want to return to Original Medicare, now’s your chance to make that switch. Once you’re out, you can also decide to enroll in a standalone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan if that’s what you need.

What’s Off the Table During the MA OEP?

Within the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period, the following changes are a no-go.

  • You Can Not Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan: During MA OEP, you can’t jump from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan. Your choice is limited to tweaking your existing Medicare Advantage coverage.
  • You Can Not Join a Medicare Drug Plan if You’ve Been in Original Medicare: If you’ve been sticking with Original Medicare, this isn’t the time to hop on board a Medicare drug plan. Your options are focused on your current coverage.
  • You Can Not Change from One Medicare Drug Plan to Another in Original Medicare: If you’ve been enrolled in Original Medicare and a drug plan, the MA OEP isn’t the window to switch to a different drug plan. Your current plan remains unchanged during this period.

Remember, the MA OEP is about refining your Medicare Advantage coverage, not making these particular moves.
