Here's what you need to know about car insurance.

Like car insurance, navigating your motorcycle insurance options can be challenging, so before going full throttle into different coverage types, let’s start with the basics.

How does motorcycle insurance work?

Similar to an auto policy, motorcycle insurance covers damage to your bike and protects you financially if you’re liable for someone else’s injuries or damage in the event of an accident.

Is motorcycle insurance required?

To drive legally, all but one state (Florida) requires motorcycle owners to carry a minimum of liability coverage. Each state has its own minimum threshold, the same as the minimum necessary for car insurance.

How much does motorcycle insurance cost?

Motorcycle insurance rates take into account many factors, like your age, the state you live in, your driving record, the age and style of your bike, the number of miles you ride a year, and more. Not all insurance companies use the same parameters, so ask an Insurance Advisor how rates are determined and how to keep them low.

Types of motorcycle insurance.

Coverage options for motorcycles are similar to those for car insurance. Here are the standard types of motorcycle insurance and what they cover.

Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability

Provides coverage for injuries and property damage to others if you're liable for an accident. It’s included in liability-only and full coverage policies, and is required in most states.

Collision Coverage

Covers damages to your bike caused by accidents with other vehicles or objects, like light posts or fences, regardless of who is at fault.

Comprehensive Coverage

This coverage serves as an extra level of protection if your bike is damaged by something other than a collision, like weather events, fire, vandalism, or an accident involving an animal.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist

This covers certain medical expenses and damages to your bike after an accident with an uninsured/underinsured driver.

Medical Payments Coverage

This coverage helps pay medical costs for you and any passengers injured in an accident. It’s not available in every state, so speak with an Insurance Advisor to see if it’s an option for you.

Qualify for discounts

One of the great advantages of having your motorcycle coverage through a major insurance company, like the ones we represent, is that you can save money by having more than one policy with us.

You may be born to be wild but you could get additional policy discounts if your bike is stored in a garage, if you belong to certain rider groups, or if you’ve taken a safe rider course sponsored by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.

Nice bike. Keep it safe.
